Clean Slate Fair Pay Charter

Why fair pay matters

Fair pay isn’t just good for our people. It’s good for our customers too. Lower staff turnover means a consistent level of service, day after day.

Clean Slate Fair Pay Charter brandmark

Our Clean Slate Fair Pay Charter is designed to protect and reward our employees based on the following criteria:

At least the Real Living Wage, from day one

Clean Slate reviews pay each April to pay at least the ‘Real Living Wage’ to staff as independently calculated by the Living Wage Foundation from their first day of employment (for limited exceptions, see below).

No unpaid work trials

Clean Slate never carries out unpaid work trials.

Pay rises based on objective criteria

Where pay progression within a role is available, Clean Slate awards increases according to objective criteria.

Men and women paid equally

Clean Slate pays men and women equally within roles, and comparable roles will also be paid equally.

Paid accurately and on time

Clean Slate will pay wages accurately and on time, and rectify any underpayments within 1 working day of being aware of them.

Limited Exceptions

In limited cases, the Real Living Wage is replaced as follows:

Apprentice Administration Staff

Will be paid significantly above the minimum wage for apprentices.

Temporary Administrators

(summer holiday jobs etc to gain experience) will be paid the full National Living Wage.

When Clean Slate takes over an employee under TUPE provisions, the employee may choose to:

1

Retain the pay and benefits of their original contract, or

2

Transfer to a Clean Slate contract and receive at least the Real Living Wage.

Why is Clean Slate not accredited by the Living Wage Foundation as a Living Wage Employer?

Clean Slate achieved accreditation as a Living Wage employer in 2020; however, this was not renewed. Clean Slate believes that the value of this accreditation in the cleaning industry is undermined by the Living Wage Foundation’s “Recognised Service Provider” (RSP) scheme. Under this programme a RSP can currently indefinitely pay some, or in many cases most cleaning staff the minimum wage yet still display a similar accreditation logo simply by paying ‘head office’ staff at a higher rate. For further information on this please visit https://www.livingwage.org.uk/recognised-service-providers.

Clean Slate believes that it is important to pay the Real Living Wage Rate to all cleaning staff and that the RSP scheme simply perpetuates the low pay problem within the cleaning industry.
